Making observations, recording observations, taking actions based on these observations and recording these actions are essential components of successful aviary management. For example you may wish to record that a particular bird is unwell or that it is moulting. For a pair, you may wish to record the date when a nest box was provided or the date the pair was seen mating. For a species, you may wish to note down when the breeding season begins or the average clutch size. For a particular clutch, you may want to record information about fostering or incubation habits of the parents.

AviMan allows you to make notes regarding a species, bird, pairing or clutch. Select the object you wish to make a note for and right-click. In the pop-up menu select Edit Notes. This will open up a note book form where you may record your observation or action along with a date. To view these notes visit the general information page of the species, bird, pair or clutch where the last 5 notes will be displayed. To see all previous notes click on the notes button.
Once a pairing has been setup, you are ready to start recording clutch and egg data for this pair.

Find the desired species in the Tree and under this node select Pairs -> Current. All the pairs of this species will be listed in the List frame.

Select the correct pair and right-click to show the pop up menu. Select Edit. The pairings form will be displayed

At the top right you will see a box titled Clutches. Fill in the field Clutch Code. You can use any text to identify a clutch. For example you may use the month & year the clutch was started such as 02/2012. Press Enter

Now Click on the Clutch Code you just entered to select the row. This will enable the Eggs section at the bottom of this window.

Enter the Date Laid for each egg on a separate row. The Fertile and Due Date columns will be filled in automatically.

Click on the Status box and select whichever applies. If an egg has just been laid and you have no information about its fertility select unknown. If you have candled the egg and know that it is fertile or not select Developing or Clear as appropriate. Similarly you may select Dead In Shell, Broken or Thrown Out if appropriate.

The Status Date is optional and may be used to store the date on which the said status was observed. For example the date you candled the egg and observed that it was developing normally.

Click the Save Button to save your data.

You may add eggs and update the status of the eggs at anytime.
Find the pairing as explained in (1) and (2) above. This will take you to the pairing and clutches form where you may add or edit data.

If an egg has hatched do the following to create a record for the new bird.

Update the Status Date to show the hatch date

Select the Status Hatched

In the column Bird, click on the square button.

This will open up the Bird editing form with most of the information already filled in for the new chick.

All you need to do now is enter the Name and click Save.

This will create a new bird in your records with the status set to Nursery

You may edit this new bird later on to update the band number or change the Name, Status etc.

As long as there are eggs in a clutch with the status unknown or developing, the clutch will be treated as an Active Clutch. It will be displayed under active clutches on your main page. Once a clutch has been completed and you wish to start editing a new clutch, enter a new clutch code on a new row in the clutches area on the top right. Select the new clutch to start entering data in the eggs section.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574523741969192685.post-22205689691852081102012-02-28T00:47:00.000-08:002012-02-28T01:04:36.871-08:00AviMan: Pairings

You have successfully installed AviMan Aviary Management System and now you want to get started on managing your birds. This article will help you do this. I will divide the process in to a few easy steps.

The AviMan interface works and feels like most email software. It is divided into three frames. The vertical frame on the left is called the Tree, the top horizontal frame is called the List and the bottom horizontal frame is called the Details frame. Each entry in the tree is called a Node. When you click on a node the list is filled with the items grouped under that node. Clicking on any item in the list shows you the details of that item in the details frame.

1) Aviary Information
In the Menu Bar on top select Edit -> Aviary Information
Here you can enter your Aviary name, address and contact information. This information will be stored and printed on your lists, hatch certificates, invoices etc.

2) Creating records for your birds
In the Menu Bar on top select Edit -> Birds
Here you can enter the data for each of your birds. The minimum information that you must enter is as follows
Species: Select the bird species such as Cockatiel, African Grey Budgerigar etc from the drop down box.
Name: This is the tag that will be used to identify the bird. If you have a proper pet name then enter here if you don't then use some nickname that will remind you of this bird.
Hatch Date: The date the bird hatched from the egg. If you don't have an exact date, enter your best guess. If you have had a bird for 2 years and it was mature when you got it then use this information to arrive at an approximate hatch date.
Status: You must also select the current status of your bird from the following.
Breeder: A bird that is mature and breedable.
Future Breeder: A bird that you are holding for future breeding but is not mature yet.
Nursery: A young unweaned bird or a baby bird.
For Sale: Any bird that is available for sale and is not being used as a breeder.
Sold: A bird that has already been sold
Dead: A bird that you previously owned but is now dead.
Lost: A bird that you no longer have as it escaped or was stolen etc.
Other: Use this status if none of the above accurately describe the status of your bird.
Sex: You must enter the sex of of your birds to be able to use them elsewhere in the software. If the sex is not known you may leave this field blank.

Additional optional information may also be entered. It is highly recommended that you keep your records as complete as possible. You can also specify an image for each bird. Just drag and drop any jpg, gif or png image file in the image area.

Enter your records in chronological order. The oldest bird should be entered first and the youngest last. This will allow you to select the Mother and Father of your own bred birds. Accurately specifying the parents of each bird will help you maintain the pedigree information of your birds. If you do not have information about the parents of any bird or the bird was purchased you may leave these fields blank.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7574523741969192685.post-9260275220479436892012-02-27T22:33:00.005-08:002013-01-12T04:05:57.781-08:00AviMan: Introduction

AviMan is a windows based Aviary Management System that helps you manage your bird records accurately and efficiently. The software started out as a personal project to maintain records of my own aviary. Over the years, I added features and made improvements as per requirements. Being a breeder and a programmer allowed me to look at requirements from both angles. I shared the software with a few friends and encouraged by their feedback the software is now being released to a wider audience.
The main features of the system include the following
